Nova Gorica, Slovenia, and Gorizia, Italy, have officially launched the European Capital of Culture for 2025, with a grand opening in Europe Square—the symbolic heart of both cities. As the sun set, the celebrations moved to an open-air stage in front of Nova Gorica’s municipal building, where an unforgettable cultural spectacle unfolded.

Throughout 2025, GO! 2025 will bring over 1,000 exciting cultural events to the region, spanning concerts, theatre, art exhibitions, film screenings, culinary experiences, and more. These events will reflect the unique spirit of the cities, offering visitors an immersive celebration of creativity, culture, and unity.

European Capital of Culture – Key Events and Highlights

The official opening marks the start of a year full of diverse events. The first major highlight will be March for Europe (May 1–9), a transformative project turning border crossings into art installations that explore the theme of unity. In September, Tastes without Borders (26–28) will allow visitors to indulge in regional culinary delights. The year will close with the Enlightened Closing Ceremony (December 1–3), a stunning light display illuminating both cities.

Additional highlights throughout the year include concerts by renowned artists like Alexander Gadjijev and performances such as Borderless Body, Dodecalogy 1972–1983, and EPIC. These events celebrate the cultural richness and creative energy that unite the two cities and regions. The year-long programme will also feature theatre performances, exhibitions, and collaborations that embrace both historical and contemporary cultural perspectives.

Explore the Region: A Blend of History, Nature, and Culinary Delights

GO! 2025 is not just about events—it’s an opportunity to explore a region where modernism, history, and nature converge. Nova Gorica, Slovenia’s youngest city, is a hub for modernist architecture, while the nearby Soča River offers stunning natural beauty. Visitors can explore the Soča Valley, home to the picturesque towns of Tolmin, Kobarid, and Bovec, all of which boast fascinating historical landmarks and breathtaking landscapes.

For those who enjoy fine wines and exceptional food, the region is a hidden gem. The Vipava Valley, often called Slovenia’s Provence, is known for its sun-drenched vineyards and boutique wineries. Additionally, Goriška Brda, with its poetic landscapes and renowned wines, offers an authentic culinary experience that celebrates the beauty of the region.

    Navigating GO! 2025

To help visitors navigate the events and attractions, the Wherever You Go! – GO!2025 web app provides up-to-date information on the latest happenings. For an even deeper experience, the BulevAR app uses augmented reality to reveal the rich history and transformation of Nova Gorica and Gorizia, allowing users to discover the shared cultural heritage of the cities in a new and exciting way.

The Slovenian Tourist Board is actively promoting GO! 2025, with arts and culture taking centre stage in their promotional activities for 2024–2025. With a range of local, regional, and international partners, the celebration promises to be a year of discovery, creativity, and cultural exchange in the heart of Europe.
