Regional Sittings dedicated to public discussion of the Lisbon Reform Treaty

Limerick 15 May 2008

On Thursday 15 May, the Joint Committee held a plenary sitting in the Millennium Theatre, Limerick Institute of Technology, dedicated to public discussion of the Lisbon Reform Treaty.

Guest Speakers were John Maguire, Emeritus Professor of Sociology in UCC and a Patron of The People’s Movement, and Professor Nick Rees, Vice President Research, National College of Ireland. The sitting in Limerick concluded the series of regional sittings undertaken by the Committee to raise awareness of the contents of Lisbon Reform Treaty in the lead up to the referendum on 12 June. Europe Day celebrated
9 May 2008 Athlone

On Friday 9 May, the Joint Committee celebrated Europe Day by holding a public sitting in Athlone dedicated to discussion of the Lisbon Reform Treaty. Members of the public debated the contents of the Treaty with members of the Committee and Guest Speakers

The Guest Speakers at the sitting were Dr. Andy Storey from AFRI (Action from Ireland) and UCD School of Politics and International Relations, and Mr. Matt Dempsey, Editor and Chief Executive of the Farmers Journal. Read the debate

Dundalk 1 May 2008

The Joint Committee held a plenary sitting in Dundalk on Thursday, 1 May dedicated to public discussion of the Lisbon Reform Treaty.

The Guest Speakers at the sitting were Dr. Kieran Allen, editor of VoteNo.ie website, the author of the The Case against the Lisbon Treaty and a candidate to be General Secretary of SIPTU, and Dr. Gavin Barrett, lecturer in European Law, University College Dublin and editor of a number of works in the field of European law, (including National Parliaments and the European Union: The Constitutional Challenge for the Oireachtas and Other Member State Legislatures). University College Cork 24 April 2008

On Thursday 24 April the Joint Committee held a plenary sitting in University College Cork to hear and discuss the views of the public and Guest Speakers on the Lisbon Reform Treaty. The Guest Speakers at the sitting were Mr. Piaras Mac Éinrí, lecturer in the Department of Geography, UCC, with a specific interest in Migration and Integration issues, and Mr. Joe Noonan, Solicitor practising in Cork and the expert witness in the Crotty Case on the legal implications of the foreign and security policy aspect of the Single European Act. The Joint Committee held a plenary sitting in Galway on Thursday, 17 April to hear and discuss the views of the public and invited Speakers on the Lisbon Reform Treaty. The Guest Speakers at the sitting were Dr. Laurent Pech, Jean Monnet Lecturer in EU Law, NUI Galway, and Mr. Barry Finnegan, lecturer and senior course tutor at the Faculty of Journalism and Media Communications in Griffith College Dublin. On Thursday 10 April the Joint Committee held a formal sitting at Dublin City University. The purpose of the special sitting was to raise awareness of the Lisbon Reform Treaty and to give members of the public an opportunity to put questions to the Committee and invited Speakers.
